Sauna, cold plunge and swims: wearing the Thrive Band through Australian life

A lot of Australians now fit more into a week than a gym session. There's the early swim, the infrared sauna after Pilates, the cold plunge at the bathhouse and the long hot shower after a winter run. If you wear a health band, one practical question comes up pretty quickly: do I have to take it off for all of that?

This guide answers that question using the ratings we publish. It also explains why keeping the Band on through your routine matters more than any single reading, and why there's no need to turn your swim or sauna into a performance project. The idea is simply to get curious about your own week.

The short answer

The Thrive Band is rated IP68 / 5 ATM, so you can shower and swim with it. It's rated for sauna use up to 80°C, and for cold down to −20°C, which covers ice baths, cold plunges and cold mornings. The battery lasts up to 14 days between charges, a charge takes 30 to 40 minutes, and you get a reminder at 35%. It comes in one size, with a 28 cm band.

So if your routine stays inside those numbers, the Band can stay on.

Why keeping it on matters

Thrive is built around Personal Baseline Intelligence, which in plain terms means answering two questions: is this normal for you, and which way is it moving?

To answer them, Thrive needs to know what usual looks like for you. That picture builds from regular readings taken automatically while you wear the Band, alongside the check-ins and habits you record. Your personal baseline needs enough consistent data before it becomes Established, and your readings and check-ins add to your Health Fingerprint, a growing picture of your own patterns over time.

Every time a wearable comes off, it leaves a gap. A gap here and there is fine, but a gap every morning at the pool, every evening in the sauna and every night on the charger soon adds up. That's why a band you can leave on for showers, swims and recovery sessions, and charge every couple of weeks, suits this kind of picture. There's no score to beat here. It's more like a diary that mostly fills itself in, so you can look back on your routine with curiosity rather than pressure.

Showers, pool laps and swims

The IP68 / 5 ATM rating means you can wear the Band in the shower and while swimming, so you don't need to take it off for lap swimming, an aqua class or a dip at the beach.

A few sensible habits help. Keep in mind that showering and swimming are what the rating covers. It isn't a dive rating, so if you plan to scuba dive or do high-speed water sports, check with Thrive support before you wear it. After salt water or a chlorinated pool, a quick rinse in fresh water and letting the strap dry is a good habit. It's also worth checking the fit after a swim, because wet skin and a loose strap can shift the Band, and a snug, comfortable fit helps it take regular readings.

Sauna: up to 80°C

Saunas have become part of many Australian routines, from bathhouses in Melbourne and Sydney to the infrared rooms attached to Pilates studios and gyms. The Thrive Band is rated for sauna use up to 80°C.

Venue temperatures do vary, though. Infrared rooms are often set lower than traditional dry saunas, and some traditional saunas run hotter than 80°C. So check the thermometer or ask the venue, and if the room is set above 80°C, take the Band off for that session and put it back on afterwards.

Comfort comes first, too. Any wearable warms up in a hot room, so if the Band feels uncomfortably hot on your skin, take it off. For session length, hydration and cooling down, follow the venue's guidance. Thrive doesn't tell you how long to stay in a sauna, and it isn't a safety alarm.

Cold plunge, ice baths and cold mornings

The Band is rated down to −20°C. That covers a cold plunge, an ice bath, an early swim in winter water and a frosty morning walk, as well as a trip to the snow.

As with heat, the rating is about the Band, not about you. How cold, for how long and how often is a personal decision. Follow the venue's guidance, build up gradually, and talk to your GP before starting heat or cold routines if you have a health condition or any doubt. A few weeks of your own patterns can give that chat something concrete to start from.

What Thrive will and won't tell you about heat and cold

Thrive is designed to help you understand your patterns and what is changing, at your own pace, so you can have better-informed conversations, with your GP too if you'd like, and make steady choices without feeling you have to optimise every session.

What it can do: it shows your trends over time against your own baseline, across sleep, recovery, activity, heart, temperature and more, with the habits you record sitting beside them, and those habits also give you a history you can look back on. You can then use Ask Thrive to ask questions about your own patterns in ordinary language, such as "What seems to affect my sleep?"

What it won't do: it won't tell you that a sauna or a cold plunge is good or bad for you, it won't prescribe a protocol, and it won't replace advice from a health professional. Some signals are measured, some are estimated and some are derived from your patterns over time, so treat what you see as a pattern to get curious about rather than a verdict on any single session.

Charging around a wet, warm routine

With up to 14 days between charges, most people only need to think about charging a couple of times a month. When the reminder arrives at 35%, pick a dry, quiet moment rather than squeezing it in before the pool, such as over breakfast, at your desk or while you read in the evening. A full charge takes 30 to 40 minutes, and you can check the battery at any time in the app under Settings.

Charging during the day also means the Band is back on for the night, when uninterrupted wear helps your sleep picture.

Sharing with the people who support your training

If you train with someone, Thrive Loops lets you share selected information, such as sleep, recovery and activity trends, with a participating trainer, health professional or someone you trust. It's your choice: you decide what to share and with whom, and you can change or revoke access at any time. Loops are optional, and people in a Loop see only what you choose to share.

Before you buy

You'll need a compatible iPhone or Android phone, because the Thrive app is on the Apple App Store and Google Play, in Australia and eight other countries. The app stores are only for downloading the app, though; they aren't where you buy the Band or a Plan. You can buy at thrivehealthband.com, or at a participating World Gym Australia location or health and wellness clinic.

The Thrive Health Band is A$660 for the first year under the launch offer (usually A$740). That includes the Band, which is yours to keep, and 12 months of the Thrive by Optihealth app, My Health on the web, Health Fingerprint, Ask Thrive, Thrive Loops and your data, paid once upfront. Prices are in AUD and include GST. Free Australia-wide shipping during the launch offer (usually A$14.99).

Nothing renews automatically. After your first year, you can get a new band plus 12 more months for A$660, or keep your band and renew the Thrive Connected Plan for A$240 a year (A$20 a month).

You're also covered by a 12-month Thrive Care Warranty, and consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law always apply. See Returns if something is wrong with your purchase.

Quick checklist

  1. Shower and swim: keep it on.
  2. Sauna: keep it on up to 80°C, and take it off if the room is hotter.
  3. Cold plunge or snow: keep it on down to −20°C.
  4. Diving or high-speed water sports: ask support first.
  5. Charge at the 35% reminder, at a dry, quiet time.
  6. Look at the habits you record beside your patterns whenever you feel like it; there's no need to check every day.

Common questions

Can I wear the Thrive Band in a spa or steam room?

Our published ratings cover showering, swimming, sauna use up to 80°C and cold down to −20°C. For anything outside those, check with Thrive support before you wear it.

Will heat or cold change my readings?

Readings can vary with what you're doing, including exercise, heat and cold. That's why Thrive looks at patterns over time against your own baseline rather than reacting to one reading, so a single hot or cold session isn't something you need to read too much into.

Does Thrive tell me if a session was too long?

No. Thrive isn't a safety alarm, so follow the venue's guidance and your health professional's advice.
